Loaves & fishes – 30 store cupboard essentials

You can muster up a supper out of thin air if you have a good range of store cupboard essentials.  Here is our list of about 30 ingredients that every house should have.  Everything on the list is non-perishable or has a long shelf life in the fridge / freezer. These key ingredients feature regularly in our recipes.  We assume that you will buy some fresh meat and vegetables to supplement the store-cupboard but it’s amazing what you can do with just the ingredients listed below.  We will post some of these recipes in the ‘store cupboard recipe’ category.

In the dry goods cupboard

  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Noodles
  • Tinned pulses (e.g. lentils, cannellini beans, butter beans, flageolet beans, black-eyed beans)
  • Tinned tomatoes
  • Red lentils
  • Green lentils
  • Plain flour (brown and white)
  • Coriander powder
  • Cumin powder
  • Chilli powder
  • Madras curry powder / garam masala
  • Soy sauce
  • Sherry
  • Honey
  • Stock cubes
  • Vinegar (red wine / white wine / balsamic)
  • A bottle of wine (red / white)
  • Olive oil

In the fridge

  • Ginger
  • Garlic

In the freezer

  • Frozen peas / broad beans
