French Toast – Pain Perdu

IMG_0798 pain perduWe were inspired by Rachel Khoo’s ‘Little Paris Kitchen’ to make some ‘Pain Perdu’ – ‘lost bread’.  Use any leftover chunky bread that’s past its best for making this sweet french toast – delicious for a weekend brunch.

For 2 adults and 1 little one you will need:

  • 1 egg
  • 200 ml full fat milk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3-4 thick slices of white bread
  • Large knob of butter

Method:

Beat the egg and add the milk and sugar.  Stir to mix.  Soak the bread for a couple of minutes (turning it in the liquid to ensure it’s coated).

Put a large frying pan on a medium heat and melt the butter.  Fry the bread in the butter, turning after 2-3 minutes.  Continue to fry on both sides until the bread is golden and brown.

We serve ours with yoghurt and berries. It’s also delicious with home-made compote.  Cheat and use some of our blackberry jam – Add 2 spoons of jam to one spoon of water and heat in a pan to create a sweet and sticky syrup for your french toast.

  1. I love a decent french toast. This looks like it fits the bill. We go to a very decent cafe for breakfast most Saturdays. They do pretty well everything great except their french toast which is pretty awful. I depend on my own skills instead.
    Best,
